Centroid install begins - 5-16-04

The control is hanging on a new bracket I had to fabricate. It is not bolted down yet.

The bracket consists of two pieces of 3" angle, cut at a 45 and welded together. The side part will serve as protection for accessories that will be mounted to the side of the mill below the bracket as well as a brace for both the Centroid cabinet and the "batwing".

I'm sure the Centroid will be up to the task, but when compared to the BOSS control cabinets that came off the machine, there is considerable difference. The BOSS cabinets were very well made, and attention to detail was apparant throughout the entire system. Obviously there isn't as much "stuff" in the Centroid box. The BOSS was old technology which took up a great deal more space, but still --- just poking through that BOSS system was inspirational. It is impressive.

This "batwing" will be cut virtually in half from top to bottom. It is needed to support the center section of the way cover, and it serves to protect the parts behind it. There is no cabinet behind the "batwing", but accessories will be hung from the side of mill itself, so the cover will serve some purpose when altered.

The batwing will be much smaller and will serve a purpose without taking up half the shop. It will attach to the top bracket that holds the Centroid box as well as a bottom bracket that will extend to the Centroid box. This should stiffen up the entire setup as well as offer some protection to the items that will be hung on the side of the mill.

The batwing on the opposite side will be cut to match this one even though its only purpose will be to hold that side of the center section where the way cover is attached.

Both batwings have drilled and tapped holes on top next to the body of the mill. These holes may well serve a purpose later when work lights and coolant supply lines are installed.

This area will contain the air inlet system which has filters and oilers for the air system on the BOSS. It will also contain the automatic oiling system, the mist cooler, and the air solenoids and valves for the air system. All will be tucked into the cavity created by the Centroid cabinet, the batwing and the top bracket.

These items need regular service, so they will be out in the open for easy access, but protected on 4 sides too.

Inside the Centroid cabinet.

Lots of unused space.
